Palestine was created as a British League of Nations Mandate for Great Britain in 1920. It had been territory in the Ottoman Empire. The Balfour Declaration of 1917 established the territory as a haven for Jews. Jews began to migrate there. In 1948 after World War II Palestine was partitioned between the Jews and the Arabs (or Palestinians). Gaza and the West Bank were the territories intended for Palestine. When Israel declared independence in 1948 they were attacked by all of their Arab neighbors. In return Israel invaded and occupied the Palestinian territories.
